Retirement
Much like the Community Integration Program, SLI’s Retirement Program focuses on meeting the unique educational, social, and emotional needs of aging individuals with a variety of intellectual and developmental disabilities. The Retirement Program bridges the gap between aging and disabilities with an understanding that it is natural for an individual to progress through the life stages into a retirement stage.
The program and the program space were designed to support participant needs with a reduced level of environmental stimulus. Activities that involve community engagement tend to be low-key, less physical while still supporting access to and independence in the community.
Up to 30 individuals participate each weekday in person-centered program activities (8:30 am – 4:00 pm). Learning / engagement opportunities include the following.
Socialization with peers
Health promotion
Leisure activities
Learning about and exploring
Computer center with Internet access
Making a difference in the community
Recognizing the changing needs of older adults with IDD is critical to supporting person-centered services and we believe that our Retirement Program is the only such program in Topeka but also a best practice in aging transitions.
