COVID-19 Update - April 10

 April 10, 1:40 pm

Message from SLI President/CEO

I write hoping that you and yours are healthy.  I want to take a moment to provide a brief COVID-19 update and message.

All 21 SLI owned homes, staffed 24/7, serving 88 people, remain healthy and free from the virus at this time.  We also serve 212 people in our Independent Living Program and Targeted Case Management who are currently free from the virus. We are so thankful for this and continue to practice strict health and safety guidelines surrounding this pandemic.

The Adopt-A-Home program has been an amazing addition during this time.  It has allowed our clients and employees to receive cheer and support and feel valued as well as bring the joy of giving to those volunteering as “adopters.”  There are really no words that adequately express the amount of gratitude I have for all of those who are being so generous with their time, talent and resources but I offer my sincerest thanks to all of you.

According to Stormont Vail and the Shawnee County Health Department, the virus is expected to peak in Kansas in the next week and a half.  Now more than ever, it is critical that we all stay the course.

Isolating is difficult for all of us for a variety of reasons.  It presents unique challenges for us supporting our clients and explaining why there has been such an abrupt change in their daily activities, why they can’t see their parents, families and friends, and why we don’t know how long this is going to go on.  It’s tiring for our front line staff who are working so hard to care for and protect those we serve.  It’s hard watching the news, seeing so much sickness and death around the country.  It’s unfathomable to see the desperation in people who have loved ones in hospitals for whom they can’t be by their side.  Drive-thru funerals.

While this entire situation can make us feel helpless, depressed and alone, it has also brought out the best in so many.  I am humbled by all of the support, generosity, and kindness that has been shown to our clients and employees.  We truly are all in this together.  “Nothing will ever be able to separate us.”
- Romans 8:39.  Not even isolation.

I, along with all of you, hope and pray for an end to all of this.  As we head into Easter weekend, I send my wishes to each of you to have hope, strength and health.  “The great gift of Easter is hope.” - Basil Hume
